TO DIE FOR STEAK SANDWICHES

When I say these STEAK sandwiches are to die for, I am truly not kidding.

Keaton and I formulated this recipe one random morning when we were wanting something easy, delicious, affordable, and quick to make for dinner. Keaton pulled up a video on how to grill a New York Strip and then all of a sudden we had the bright idea to put it on a sandwich.

Overall, this recipe’s ingredients are very mailable so you can take off or add in whatever you would like to, my only suggestion is you try the OG recipe first and then make tweaks after that because the base sandwich is to die for.

Serves 2

INGREDIANTS

The Sandwich

Bun x 2

Truly you can choose whichever bun you would like to use. Our favorites to use so far have been brioche, trader joes asiago cheesy bun, and a ciabatta bun toasted in the oven. If you are going to toast in the oven, simply preheat to 350 and wrap your buns up in aluminum foil and throw them in for 10 minutes!

New York Strip x 1

When picking out a NYS, for 2 people we try to find one that is around a pound. We have also found that the more fat the strip has, the more flavorful the meat is going to be, you will not actually be eating the fat… you cut it off before you eat it.

Yellow Onion x 1 caramelized

We only ever use 1/2 of the onion and save the other 1/2 for a different recipe later on in the week!

Arugula Salad (arugula, olive oil, lemon, salt, pepper)

We always make the whole container, put a little on the sandwich and then juj up the rest of it with balsamic glaze and parm cheese and eat it as a side.

THE SAUCE

Creamy Horseradish x 1 tbsp

Sour Cream x 1 tbsp

Light Mayonnaise x 1 tbsp

Lemon x 1 squeeze

Worcestershire Sauce x 4 dashes

PREP

Inside every recipe there are little tips and tricks to make the actual cooking part go much quicker and smoother. In this recipes case, that is going to be the prep part!

My favorite part about this recipe is that it is perfect for 2, meaning you can divide and conquer and have this cooked in half the amount of time! In this instance, my husband Keaton tackles everything steak and I tackle everything sauce and veg! If you have a helper in the kitchen, start by choosing either Keaton’s part or Kaitlyn’s part. ; ))

KEATON’S PART: The Steak

Pat both sides of the steak BONE dry and season generously with salt and pepper. Place seasoned steak on a clean plate, gather your supplies (metal tongs and meat thermometer) and head to the grill. (Keaton usually waits to leave until I start to caramelize the onions so everything gets done around the same time.)

KAITLYN’S PART: The veg and sauce

Sauce Prep: gather ingredients (creamy horseradish, sour cream, light mayo, lemon, worcestershire), a tablespoon and small condiment bowl and set aside.

Onion: Cut your onion in half, place half of it into a container to save for a different recipe and then cut the rest into thin slices.

Arugula Salad: Wash your arugula and pat dry, gather your ingredients (olive oil, lemon, salt and pepper) and set aside.

STEP BY STEP

KEATON’S PART: The Steak

The only thing that I know about the steak part is that Keaton puts a generous amount of salt and pepper on both sides and then disappears to the grill for about 10 minutes. I do know we strive for a medium rare cook temp which is 130-135. When he gets back up, we let the steak rest for about 3-5 minutes and then start the cutting process. You are going to want to cut all of the fat off of the steak first and then slice the rest of the steak into very very thin slices by the grain . Below are the two YouTube videos we watched before making this recipe that helped us to perfect the steak!

KAITLYN’S PART: the veg & sauce

I am going to warn you, this job requires you to do three different things at the same time but not a single one is hard and it comes toegether beautifully.

Step 1: Caramelize your onion.

I heat a saute pan up to medium heat, toss in the onion, slather with olive oil, cover and stir occasionally every now and then. While your onion caramelizes, you can do the rest of your duties! After you’re all done (about 10 minutes later) place in a small dish and set aside.

Step 2: Make your sauce.

Ingredients

Stir the sauces all together, taste, and add anything to your desire! Sometimes I end up adding salt, pepper, onion, or garlic seasoning but most of the time I just like it how it is! If you like spice, add extra creamy horseradish, if you do not like spice maybe just do 1/2 tbsp creamy horseradish!

1 tbsp Creamy Horseradish

1 tbsp sour cream

1 tbsp light mayo

squeeze of lemon

4 dashes of worestershire sauce

Step 3: Arugula Salad

Place your arugula in a salad bowl (or giant bowl) and add a generous amount of olive oil, salt, pepper, and squeeze of lemon and toss. After your salad is tossed together, lay a little bed of the salad on each sandwich bun.

For the rest of the arugula, we are going to turn it into a delicious side dish! Place a hefty amount on the side of each persons plate, drizzle with balsamic glaze and a sprinkle of parmesan cheese! By now, the steak should be inside and all sliced up and you can now build your To Die For Steak Sandwich!

If you end up cooking the recipe, let us know how it turned out on IG @whatsfresh.blog

Enjoy!!!

XOXO – Kaitlyn
