How to Pair your Necklaces with Necklines

I swear, everywhere I go I see all of these girls with such cute and amazing jewelry, specifically necklaces. But for some reason whenever I try to put a necklace on it feels so out of place. Well, that’s because I had no idea that the neckline of my shirt effected the look of the necklace I was matching with it. If you’ve ever had similar experience this post is for you.

There are a million types of necklaces AND necklines that exist in our world. I am only going to go over 4 of the most trending types of necklines and the types of necklaces that I think match them the best.

Square Neck

Any top with a wide chest opening like the square neckline is great for dangling 14 – 18 inch necklaces. I personally wouldn’t layer necklaces with a neckline like this because it will heavily contrast with the harsh square line of the top. My favorite to pair with a square neck would be name or initial necklaces because they will really pop/show off the pendant.

Adhering to the 14 – 18 inch length is incredibly important with this specific neckline. You don’t want the necklace to be any longer than 18 inches because it will dip below the neckline and hide the charm/pendant making it basically pointless. Any shorter than 14 inches is considered a choker, in my opinion a choker with a wide opened neckline like the square neck gives the appearance of a thick neck.

I was in search of a K initial necklace for almost an entire year. I purchased multiple from Target & even tried to make my own using supplies from Hobby Lobby & Amazon. All which were returned due to the quality, shape of the K, and length of the necklace. FINALLY!!!!! I came across Grace Personalized on Esty and found the perfect combination of my preferences. They range from $30 – $60 but are worth every penny. I have worn this for about half a year and never taken it off. It hasn’t tarnished or worn at all. If this specific letter style and length isn’t your fav look, she makes a wide variety of styles – including full name necklaces if you want your own Carrie necklace. ;)))

Boat Neck

In my personal opinion, this neckline is the hardest to pair a necklace with. The boat neck neckline touches the base of your neck which is going to hide basically any type of dangle or layered necklace, depending on it’s length. I like to pair a boat neck with a simple thin 14-16 inch flat chain to help create a chic/elegant look or a charm necklace. The charms will follow the base of the neckline and pop out out at the sides of the shirt giving it a more trendy look.

I also like to pair a boat neck with an 18 inch necklace with a small charm (red heart). The initial necklace is a 14 inch & unfortunately dips into the neckline every chance it gets, I simply just never take it off. The heart however, stays in it’s place all day! You can find a bunch of cheap ($5-$10) 18 inch necklaces at H&M, which is where this one is from.

V Neck

The deep V neckline is the perfect opportunity to pull out your statement necklaces.

I would gravitate towards necklaces that have a heavier pendant on them so they will make the necklace drag down giving a symmetrical look to the neckline. The deeper the v, the longer the chain of your necklace should be!

Crew Neck

A crew neck neckline is basically any type of round neckline with no collar.. think sweatshirts & t shirts. Here is where you can pull out any and every necklace you own and wear them all at the same time. Yes, I am talking about layering.

When it comes to layering your necklaces, you want to make sure you have necklaces at multiple different lengths: 14, 16, and 18 inches are ideal. Anything longer than 18 might be too long unless you’re wearing a v neck or tight fit shirt. You also want to make sure you have multiple different types of chains as well, thin, flat, chunky, links, ect. In my opinion, a charm necklace is a KEY component to a good layered look.

Instead of posting a thousand necklaces, I figured inspo pics would just be easier so you get the jist.

XOXO – Kaitlyn
