Debating chopping your hair off?

Me after a drastic 5 inch chop desperately wishing there would have bee a guide to help me figure out I was making a HORRIBLE decision for myself.
aka the inspiration behind this post

Let’s start with guide 1…

You haven’t booked the appointment but you really want to.

Short cuts are in, there’s no hiding it. They’re all that I have seen on my socials from Pinterest to Tik Tok. But let’s be real here.. some girls simply just aren’t made to sport short hair. There are two rules to follow to help you to figure out if you could actually pull off short hair: the 2.25 rule and the face shape rule. Below is a step by step guide to trying both of the rules to help you to figure out if you could pull off short hair.

2.25 Rule

The 2.25 rule is basically a fool proof method to help you figure out if you will look good with a short hair style or not.

The rule states that if the longest part of your chin is less than 2.25 inches from the tip of your earlobe, then shorter hair styles will look great on you! If it is longer than 2.25 inches from your ear lobe, then stick to longer hair styles.

How to apply the 2.25 rule with 2 easy steps
1. All you will need is a ruler and a pencil.
2. Hold the pencil at the bottom of your chin and the ruler vertical until it is touching the tip of your earlobe. The number the tip of the pencil is pointing to is what you are looking for. If it is greater than 2.25 inches, stick to long hair. If it is less than 2.25, go short!

Face Shape Rule

Truly any face shape can pull off short hair, but specific styles look better on specific shapes. If you’ve already passed the 2.25 rule, keep reading to find out what hair styles will suit you best.

ROUND: buzz cut, long bob, pixie, long layers, shag.

SQUARE: long layered bob, side swept bangs, shoulder length hair.

OVAL: if you have an oval face shape, you’re one of the lucky ones. Oval face shapes tend to look great with basically any hair style.

HEART: long pixie, long face framing layers.

SUITABLE FOR ALL: the bob cut, short cropped hair, bangs,

Onto guide 2…

You’ve made the chop and now what?

There are two feelings you might be experiencing right now: 1. you genuinely love your hair and feel amazing or you cannot stand it and can’t stop crying.

If you are falling under the “hate my hair” category below are some tips and tricks to help you feel better about your new look.

You might just need to give it some time.

If you had longer hair and drastically cut a big portion off, it is naturally going to be a bit of a jump scare and will take some getting used to. Before you make any rash decisions or panic that you will feel like this until your hair grows back, you just need to give it a few days to sink in.

Personally it has been about 2 months since my drastic cut. The more days that go by, the better I feel about the look of my hair. Don’t get me wrong, there are obviously days where I still feel in hate with it. but who doesn’t hate their bad hair days?

So you’ve given it a few days and still hate it… try a new style!

As in straighten it, blow dry it, mouse it, curl it, slick it back. Literally try anything and everything until you’ve found your new groove. You have a completely new shape and definition to your hair. What you used to do and liked the look of might not look great with this particular style. Don’t know where to start? Type your new style into google, tik tok, pinterest, ect. and see what type of styling best matches your new cut.

Personally , I used to HATE styling my hair just because I had so much of it and it took forever. Now I think the only times I love my new hair is when it’s styled. Like I said, new hair basically new person.

Embrace it!

Last but not least… if you brought an inspo pic in, understand the fact that you will 9/10 times never end up looking like the girl in the picture. You are two completely different people with two completely different sets of hair, two completely different face shapes, ect. Plus let’s face it, they most likely have botox, fillers, and extensions. Might just be time for you to embrace the chop and let your hair grow back.

XOXO – Kaitlyn
