That would be Miss Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles! If you’re already living in one of the following states, thinking of relocating to, or simply just want to dress like a local on your next vacation this post is for you! I have deep dived each states wardrobe trends so you’re not sticking out like a sore thumb on your next visit;))
Chicago, Illinois
the windy city
If there is one thing a Chicagoan knows it is the temperamental weather patterns of their beloved city. Coined as the windy city, that is not all the Chicagoan has to take into consideration when investing in their wardrobes. They also have freezing winters, humid summers and at any time of the day, run the risk of a partly cloudy sky. All of this makes layers and coats the city’s best friend. When layering up in the windy city, lean towards a chic business casual/street style aesthetic… emphasis on the chic. This is going to look like all of the best pea coats, trench coats, and blazers layered over top of a good neutral top, and a casual bottom.
Since Chicago basically always runs the risk of leaning towards the chilly side, a good old chunky staple scarf will be your best friend.
New York, New York
the big apple
Jay Z wasn’t kidding when he coined New York as a concrete jungle, you will be walking a substantial amount while in the Big Apple making comfortable shoes a staple in a New Yorkers closet. Besides the absurd amount of walking the New Yorker takes on, they also have the four seasons to take into consideration. If you are thinking about moving, your closet size DOES in fact matter! Being the fashion center of the world, New York’s style is truly alllll over the board. I think the one thing the New Yorker does best is style mixing. Think patterns, shapes, and styles that simply do not go together but somehow compliment each other perfectly. Mini dresses over jeans, long denim shorts and designer bags, chic dresses with a no make up and messy bun compliment, layered tube tops over button downs … you get the point, right?
When shopping for the New Yorkers aesthetic, don’t think too much about how your pieces will pair together. Instead focus on pieces that you genuinely love and then layer them together later. Remember, they truly mix and match anything so you cannot make a wrong choice when shopping. A couple of staple pieces that a New Yorker keeps in their closet is a good neutral blazer, various button downs, and corset tops.
Los Angeles, California
the golden state
With a high of 95 and a low of 48, it’s no wonder they named CA the Golden State … or that their residents are always in a relaxed, carefree state of mind. When getting dressed for the day the Californian also doesn’t put very much stress, thought, or effort into their outfits. They are truly dressing for comfort, think oversized pieces and soft fabrics with a flare of their coastal nature: neutral tones, thick stripes, flowy skirts, ect.
If there is a specific outfit that the Californian considers a go to, it’s an oversized soft pair of jeans and a big baggy top of any form. I think Free People has the softest denim of all of the denims I have felt. Personally, I think a pair of their barrel jeans could work for each of the City Slickers discussed in this post! Bonus points because they are one of the trendiest pieces on the market right now!
