Want to try the slick back ponytail?

You’re on your third dirty hair day & really don’t want to shower but also don’t want to look like a greasy girl??

Let me introduce you to the slick back ponytail.

Truthfully, I don’t really do all of that much to my hair for a couple of reasons:

1. I am lazy.

2. I really don’t know how to do anything to my hair.

3. I hate washing it constantly.

4. I love having it out of my face.

All of these reasons are what makes the slick back ponytail my newest and favorite go to hair style on my last dirty hair day. It is one of the easiest hair trends to recreate & pull off with little to no practice. Plus, there are a plethora of different ways to style it so once you have the hang of the slicking part, your options are basically endless.

NOW WHAT?

Brush through your hair with a normal comb/brush/whatever the h*ll you use to brush your hair.

I have heard of people applying hair masks when they slick back their hair. If that is something you’re interested in, this is where you would apply that. Personally, I have never used this method before simply because I am incredibly lazy and do not care enough but some people do swear by it. I would just make sure you’re using a hair mask that’s safe to keep in for multiple hours.

Gather your hair as if you are going to put it into a ponytail at whatever height you’d like. Then slather a reasonable amount of ECO gel onto your hair (top, sides, and underneath). I always dip the tips of my fingers in and do a little bit at a time until I’ve found the right amount. AKA the amount that has successfully left you without any fly aways. You want it to be nicety coated but not soaking.

Using the fine toothed comb, brush your hair back into the pony as slick as possible (holding the hair still, not yet ponying).

Once you’ve gotten your hair as smooth as desired, tie the hair back with your hair tie and reapply a minuscule amount of styling gel with your finger tips to your fly aways. I also like to apply a light spray of hair spray but this is definitely not required.

I have still yet to master the tying part of this process without causing any bumps to arise. If you get bumps, do not panic. As a slick back newbie & let’s be real… perfectionist, I always have to bobby pin bumps back. Again, this is NOT required, bumps are totally normal and fine to leave if you don’t care. If you do choose to bobby pin, my personal favorite to use with slick backs are the curved bobby pins with no bumps. They mold perfectly to your head and simply camouflage as if no mistakes were even made 😉

Here is where you can get creative

1. Keep it as a slicked pony

2. Use the elastic hair ties to braid your hair into as many sections as you’d like.

3. Twist your hair into a sleek bun and pin with a bobby pin for a ballerina-esque style.

4. Add a bow around the base of the ponytail.

5. Bubble braid with various bows.

IF YOU WOULD RATHER MIDDLE PART VS. SLICK STRAIGHT BACK

First, brush your hair completely through and part hair directly down the middle.

Then, leave two small pieces down at the top of your forehead and gather the rest of your hair back. (picture for example)

Continue onto step 2 above.

WHEN TO SLICK IT BACK

The slick back ponytail is very sleek, elegant and sexy making it the perfect look for a date night, clubbing with your friends, or for those days at work when you want to look a little bit more put together. Personally, my obsession with the hairstyle stems from it keeping my hair out of my face so it would also be perfect for hiking, a pool/beach day, or when it’s windy outside!

Warning!!!

If you are going to slick it back, be cautious of the shirt you pair the hairstyle with. If you slick back your hair then put on a massive oversized sweater, sweatshirt or tee shirt, it is going to minimize the size of your head. My favorite type of shirt to pair the slick back with is a shirt with a tighter fit. Another thing to look out for is the neck line. Personally, I think either a turtleneck, mock neck, or a tight off the shoulder top will look the best with the slick back pony tail.
